Where Is CODESYS Used?
CODESYS is a software platform for developing IEC 61131-3 control applications. It can support machine logic, I/O processing and, on suitable targets, motion or visualization tasks. The engineering environment on a computer and the runtime executing the application on a controller are distinct components. Suitability depends on the supported runtime and device manufacturer requirements.
Structured Text Does Not Replace Architecture
Structured Text (ST) is a textual IEC 61131-3 programming language for expressing conditions, calculations and data operations. A maintainable application also needs machine modules, operating states, command priorities and fault behavior.
For example, an automatic cycle start command must be evaluated alongside device readiness and operating conditions. Keeping these conditions clearly defined helps PLC behavior and operator messages remain consistent. Safety functions require their own design; this example is not a safety program.
Tasks, Data Ownership And HMI
Control loops, communication and operator interfaces may have different timing needs. Task periods must reflect the process and hardware load. Define which module owns each shared value and how other modules consume it.
Mapping physical I/O to meaningful signals, documenting units and limits, and separating recipes from service parameters help maintenance. PLC software must also validate HMI commands; the screen alone is not an authorization or safety boundary.
Portability And Modernization
A common engineering environment can provide conceptual consistency across controllers. Device libraries, fieldbus configuration, I/O mappings, firmware and licensing remain project-specific. Inventory source code, installed packages and parameter backups before migrating a machine. A controller change should not be planned as a recompilation alone.
Questions To Ask Before Development
What are the machine modes and acceptance criteria? Is the source project available? Are controller and device versions known? Which axes must coordinate? What information do the HMI and higher-level systems need? These questions connect hardware selection with the software scope.
